EXPANSION LEAD - CIVIL BACKGROUND

Company Overview

BEAR Engineering provides independent, objective & data driven foundation, drainage, seismic & retaining wall inspections for homeowners, buyers & sellers, both onsite & remote.  Working at BEAR Engineering is a unique engineering opportunity. Our clients are a mix of people who are in the process of purchasing a home and they need an expert evaluation of the foundation & drainage in a tight timeframe or homeowners who are observing troubling signs of issues and need the expert, independent & objective guidance. The wide variety of construction styles and ages, combined with the variety of challenging soil conditions (hillsides, reclaimed land, expansive soils, seismic hazards) mean that you will see something new and interesting on every inspection. It is not unusual for homeowners to have past geotechnical reports, design drawings, structural calculations, and other inspection reports for their properties.

Combined with BEAR Engineering’s archive of reports and open source geotechnical and geological data, you will need to make on the ground observations and apply engineering judgement to determine possible causes of the client’s problem, possible safety hazards and risks, and possible solutions based on each client’s budget and priorities. It really is an interesting and unique practice of engineering judgement. You are working with limited data points and need to build a picture of what is going on through the course of the inspection. Many clients have no idea how foundations are designed or function.  Every house is different in some way. You get to interact with different people (both agents, homeowners, buyers & sellers) daily from all walks of life. It’s very rewarding to know you are helping people out with one of their most valuable assets.

Role Overview - Read This First

  • This is an extremely hard job.

  • There is a real chance you fail.

  • The role is designed as high risk / high reward.

  • Do not apply unless you're ready for your life to be largely dominated by work while launching the area, including working some weekends and doing inspections on weekends when needed.

What You'll Do

  • You will be the engineer who goes into a brand-new territory where the BEAR name is not known, opens the market, and runs the region largely solo (regions will vary, first is likely the Sacramento Area, next San Diego / Orange County)

  • You will perform all inspections, do all realtor outreach & presentations to win business, and build relationships across the real estate ecosystem — agents, contractors & engineering peers.

  • Real estate office presentations is the primary way in which you can grow the business and you will need to average at least 1 per week for the first year.

  • You own the client experience: keeping clients happy, building & growing reviews, coordinating your schedule, producing all reports (they will be reviewed; an assistant helps, but you own it), and maintaining fast report turnaround.

Training & Launch Model

  • You will be trained by Nathan for whatever number of inspections it takes to get you proficient and ready to take on this role (likely a few months)

  • Then you deploy to a new region and open a BEAR Engineering presence there.

  • Support includes:

    • Overseas assistant (admin + outreach/report assistance)

    • Nathan as a resource who can visit periodically & help out

    • Slack access to other engineers in the company for general questions

    • Company templates & training

Effort Required

  • Minimum 60 hours/week; some weeks 80 hours.

  • Typically 2-3 inspections per day.

  • You will work in the hot and the cold

  • Handle challenging clients

  • Face rejection as you market the business to a new region

Standards To Uphold

  • When you open a new region, you are the face of BEAR Engineering.

  • Your inspection quality, professionalism & client interactions set the tone for everything that follows.

  • Every inspection matters. Every relationship with a realtor matters. Every client experience matters.

  • We have maintained a 5 star rating over 15 years, you must keep this 5 star rating in this new region.

  • The standard is simple: protect the reputation and deliver excellent work from day one.

Requirements

  • All minimum requirements of the Foundation Inspection Engineer role

  • High-quality engineering + high-speed reporting ability

  • Networking & sales comfort (realtors, contractors, peers)

  • Rejection tolerance + client handling skills

  • Extreme work ethic and self-direction

  • Personable and communicates well with a wide variety of personalities

  • Do not apply if you want a 40-hour week, predictable routine, or you dislike sales, networking & presenting.

Benefits

  • Full Health, Dental & Vision Insurance (administered through TriNet)

  • 401K (1% matching)

  • Mileage reimbursement

  • 5 weeks total combined time off (vacation, holidays & sick days)

  • 100% field work (no office to come into)

Compensation & Upside

  • If you succeed for the first year, you will keep 85% of the profits

  • Expected first-year potential: $200,000+

  • Assuming continued performance, your salary will increase beyond the first year

  • Ongoing residual income: assuming you open the market successfully, you earn an ongoing percentage of the revenue for that region (up to 10 engineers) for as long as you remain with BEAR Engineering. This can add up to a significant amount as the region grows

Career Path (If You Keep Winning)

Opening a region and managing it aren't always the same person or skill set. After launch, more resources can come in. If you perform and keep standards, you have the right of first refusal to become the manager of that region. If you're exceptional, you can repeat: open a region, earn the percentage, open the next, repeat. This can compound into a highly successful career.
